The Color Kata is a fun and funky hotel with a unique look that blends the past and present Phuket. As the name suggests, there are some colourful surprises in store with a dazzling lobby, a cool place to hang out with friends or your laptop with free Wi-Fi Internet. The rooms are quirky and cool each furnished with computers, designer décor, hanging beds and an unmissable element of Phuket's Old Town.
The funky hotel is located approximately 10 minutes walk from the beautifully curved bay of Kata, which boasts a soft sandy beach lined with shady trees and welcoming waters of the Andaman Sea.
As a destination, Kata has a lot to offer holiday makers. The area is easy to navigate on foot and there are a plethora of dining options, activities, natural beauty spots and shopping centres to explore. It appeals to all ages, with friendly locals and of course an all-year-round warm climate.
The renovated hotel took 12 months to complete and has a drastic new look that was created with the help of a team of fresh and forward thinking designers. From the metallic facade to the seven foot swinging bed, The Color Kata is full of surprises.
One of the most striking features is the two-storey high, open lobby with blocks of bright colours hanging and dangling down the walls, with a peculiar shaped centre-piece circular sofa. The bold plastic chairs and tables have the distinct styling of big name European furniture designers.
With coffee tables, sofas, music and exciting décor, the lobby is where guests and walk-in customers can hang out, socialise and log on to the Internet using the free Wi-Fi connection provided. Refreshments are available until 11pm from the Gallery Cafe next door, another exciting element of the hotel.
The air conditioned reception area is enclosed in a glass box in between the lobby and cafe, and has a carved wooden reception desk which could have come straight from a science fiction movie set. It extends like a bridge and connects with a small seating area for waiting visitors. The back wall displays an image of Phuket's past with a floor to ceiling close up print of a Sino Portuguese architectural feature. This theme of contrasting old and new runs throughout the hotel and is emphasised in each of the 24 rooms.
When entering The Gallery Cafe one of the first things you pass by is the huge tree trunk protruding from the floor. Once inside the ceiling captures your attention with a criss cross of bright coloured square rods that look like spiders legs. The black sofas, designer plastic chairs, bold shiny cushions and patterned cut outs on the wall, follow the same theme as the lobby. For guests, The Gallery Cafe is where the continental breakfast is served, there is also a fully stocked bar and restaurant menu for lunch and dinner.
Venturing into the depths of the hotel there are plenty more design features that catch the eye, like a sparkling wall of lights which acts as an illuminating backdrop for a huge antique bell on display near the stairwell. At the first floor lounge area the balcony overlooks the colourful lobby giving a full view of the daring decor. Here another contrast of old and new can be found with an ultra modern shelf displaying a collection of religious artefacts.
The hip accommodation at The Colour Kata is a world away from the typical rooms found in Phuket which tend to be Asian contemporary with neutral tones and just a slight touch of colour. Here there is a chic mixture of colour and style, with dark tones and bright colours blending together for a quirky and cool look.
There are two room types, the Standard Room at 22sqm and the Superior Room, slightly larger at 25sqm. Each is uniquely styled but follows the same design theme with elements of the present and past. There is just one Superior Room, and it can accommodate three guests with a large king-sized and a single bed.
Beds are something special at The Color Kata. To begin there is the size, the king-sized beds throughout are a huge 7ft and like all beds, have a surprise in store. They are suspended from the ceiling and have the option to swing for extra relaxation. To accentuate the bed area even more, the designers have raised a section of the wall from the head of the bed, curving over to the ceiling above, which displays a blown up image from Phuket's Old Town.
When not sleeping, guests have plenty of in-room entertainment to keep them occupied that incorporates the latest technology. The large flat screen TVs, offering a range of international satellite channels and movies, can also be used for the Internet. Each room includes a PC wired up to the TV with free Internet access. In addition, gadgets and games are easy to connect providing a multitude of amusements within the privacy of the room.
The room layout utilises space well with no bulky wardrobes and minimal fitted furniture. Even the bathroom facilities share the same space, enabling guests to step directly out of the shower into the room. This open living style is refreshing and has some clever features such as light shades that can adjusted up or down to set the mood, rotating TVs that can be viewed from the bed or seating area and modern bathroom fixtures.
The hotel has no fancy pool or luxurious spa, which means the room rates are reasonable, making it affordable for budget conscious holiday makers but without sacrificing comfort. It's the perfect place to rest after a day exploring the local area and relaxing on the beach, coming back to find all the technology comforts of home, but with a designer twist.
For a boutique hotel, there is plenty to discover at The Color Kata.
