Khao Lak is a low key family resort destination approximately 60 kilometres north of Phuket, on the mainland in Phang Nga province. The most popular section of the long wide beach is Bang La On, where most of the hotels, shops and restaurants are congregated. There is a good mix of different style hotels and resorts, for varying budgets throughout the area, with no fuss affordable bungalows as well as more remote upmarket resorts. Khao Lak is home to the Lamru National Park and has protected its natural landscape from too much development, which is said to be like Phuket 20 years ago. The area is also a launch point for divers to explore the world famous Similan and Surin Island dive sites.
