On arrival at Phuket International Airport there are taxi services to take you to your destination. The plush silver cabs known as airport limousines, have a desk within the airport where you pre pay according to the set rates on display. Outside the main building there is also a metered taxis stand. Getting around the island, there are some independent taxi drivers operating from popular resort areas, but be prepared to pay international rates.
These are the bright red and yellow mini-vans that line the streets in busy tourist areas. They have some what of a bad reputation for overcharging, so there has been some effort to standardise the prices. However, as there are no meters, it is advisable to always agree on a price with the driver before you get in.
Songtaews are the blue and pink trucks with long benches in the back, that run from the main beach locations to the market area in Phuket Town. Used by both tourists and locals they run roughly every 30 minutes during daylight hours and are the cheapest form of transport costing no more than 40 baht per journey.
The men on motorbikes with orange or red waistcoats, that drive around beeping their horn are offering affordable taxi rides, ideal for short distances. Set a price before getting on board and hold on as they can snake around the traffic at speed!
To explore the island, the best way to get around is by car. Car rentals are available in all the major resort areas, with a number of international rental companies located at the airport. An international or Thai driving license is required, and remember to drive on the left.
The main roads in Phuket are fast and dangerous, so unless you are an experienced motorbike driver, rent with caution. Motorbikes are an affordable way to get around and ideal if you can avoid busy roads, but all too often accidents occur and unfortunately rental companies often overcharge to repair damage.
